Our recommendations for lawn restoration after stump grinding.
🛠 Step 1: Cleaning and preparation.
Remove wood chips/sawdust.
Add 2-3 inches of fresh topsoil to level the area and restore fertility.
🌿 Step 2: Soil enrichment.
Apply a starter fertilizer rich in nitrogen (look for lawn mixes).
Lightly mix it with the topsoil so that nutrients are available to the new roots.
🌱 Step 3: Seed selection.
For Cleveland’s cool-season climate, use a mix of:
40% Kentucky bluegrass → rich color, self-repairing.
40% Tall fescue → drought and traffic tolerant.
20% Fine fescue → shade tolerant.
Optional: You can overseed with perennial ryegrass for quick green cover while the slower-growing species establish themselves.
You can choose other seed proportions and adapt the mix to your lawn conditions.
💧 Step 4: Planting
Distribute the seeds evenly over the prepared soil.
Lightly rake to ensure seed-to-soil contact.
Cover with a thin layer of straw or mulch to retain moisture and protect from birds.
🚿 Step 5: Watering schedule.
First 2 weeks: Water lightly 2-3 times a day to keep the soil moist.
Weeks 3-6: Reduce watering to once a day, more thoroughly.
After establishment: Switch to 1-2 thorough waterings per week.
✂️ Step 6: Maintenance
First mowing when the grass reaches 7-10 cm.
Lightly fertilize after 6-8 weeks. Sow seeds in bare patches in the fall for a thicker lawn.
⚡ Seasonal timing
Best time: Early fall (September) or spring (April–May).
Fall planting is ideal in Ohio because lower temperatures and autumn rains help the roots establish themselves before winter.
Good luck with the landscaping!>
