🔥 Campfire Story: The Resident in My Stump.

Pull in close — this one’s told best like I’m still afraid to say it too loud.

I didn’t notice anything strange at first.

The stump had been there for years — a wide, flat thing at the back of my property, half rotted, half solid, the kind of stump you stop seeing because it’s always been there. I mowed around it. I tossed tools on it. Sometimes I sat on it to drink coffee.
Then one morning, I saw footprints. Small ones. Bare. Leading straight to the stump… and stopping at it. No prints leaving. No prints circling. Just a trail that ended at the wood like someone had walked right into it.
I told myself it was a trick of the dirt. I told myself lots of things. But then I started hearing noises. Not animals. Not wind. Not anything I could explain. Soft shuffling inside the stump. A faint tapping, like fingernails on hollow wood. Sometimes a low murmur — not words, just the shape of speech without the sound.
A tree stump, like a house. With little windows and a door. Someone lives inside.

I should’ve left it alone. But curiosity is a stupid, hungry thing.

One evening, just after sunset, I walked out to the stump. The air felt wrong — heavy, like it was pressing down on my shoulders. The stump looked darker than usual, like the shadows were clinging to it instead of falling across it.

I leaned in.
“Hello?” I whispered.
Something answered. Not with a voice — with movement. A slow shift inside the stump, like someone adjusting their weight. Then a long, dragging inhale, as if the stump itself was breathing in my scent.
I stumbled back. The stump creaked — a deep, resonant sound that didn’t match its size. Then I heard it a whisper. Right against the wood. Right at my ear level.
“I live here now.”
I froze. The stump didn’t move again. The yard went silent — no insects, no wind, nothing. I didn’t sleep that night.

Over the next week, I saw signs.

Small things at first — the stump’s surface changing, softening, almost swelling. Then larger things — the ground around it shifting, the roots rising like ribs under the soil. And every night, I heard the resident inside. Sometimes pacing. Sometimes humming. Sometimes whispering things I couldn’t understand.
But the worst was last night. I woke up to the sound of my back door opening. Slowly. Deliberately. I crept to the window and looked out.
The stump was glowing faintly — a dull, pulsing amber, like embers deep inside it. The ground around it moved, rising and falling like breath. And something was standing beside it. I couldn’t see its face. I couldn’t see its shape. Just a tall, dark outline leaning close to the stump, listening as the thing inside whispered to it. Then both of them turned toward my house. Not fast. Not sudden. Just… aware. I ducked away from the window. I didn’t look again.

This morning, the stump looks normal.

The ground is still. The yard is quiet. But I know better. Someone — something — has taken up residence inside that stump. And last night, it invited company.
