When grinding a small stump, very few wood chips remain, and they mix well with the soil. In this case, there is nothing to prevent you from planting new plants immediately, while the soil is still loose, provided the season is suitable.
What to do if a large stump has been ground and a pile of mulch remains?
If you are patient and wait, you can safely plant any plants the following year.
How to shorten the waiting time before planting?
In some cases, you can plant a new plant in the current season.
If you remove most of the wood chips, the soil will be dense enough to hold the plant roots and allow them to develop. Grass and flowers with a shallow root system are not very dependent on soil quality. Check the pH; if it is suitable, feel free to plant. Keep in mind that sawdust can slightly acidify the soil over time.
If you add compost or other fertilizer that compensates for the deficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus, you can plant after 3-6 months. Time is needed for the microelements to be evenly distributed and for the chemical processes to stabilize.
We DO NOT RECOMMEND planting trees in the same place on the day the stump is removed. But we know of cases where customers did this and everything worked out for them. It is important to monitor the pH and regularly apply fertilizers.
✅ What can help achieve a better result:
Remove excess wood chips (the top 10-15 cm).
Mix the remaining chips with the soil for even distribution.
Check and improve the soil by adding compost or fertilizers to restore nutrients.
Maintain soil moisture to accelerate decomposition.
Monitor the pH; if necessary, add fertilizer to reduce acidity, or choose plants that prefer an acidic environment.
Good luck with the landscaping!
