Campfire Tale: The Zombie Stump.

Two glowing eyes set deep in the stump’s dark center, staring back at the house with a hunger older than the tree itself.

Pull up a log — this one’s best told with the fire low, the night thick, and everyone leaning in a little too close.

You’ve heard stories about haunted houses, cursed forests, ghosts that wander old roads… But nobody ever warns you about the things that stay behind after a tree dies.

It started with a dead oak. Cut down clean. Hauled away. Only the stump remained — a harmless little disc of wood in the yard. Or so everyone thought.
Little shoots first — thin, pale things that pushed up through the soil like fingers testing the air. Then thicker ones, rising in clusters, spreading across the yard in a slow, creeping web. The grass buckled. The ground swelled. The roots moved like something alive.

But jokes stop being funny when the thing starts to win.

One night — the kind of night where the moon hides and the wind forgets to breathe — the house shook. Not from thunder. Not from trucks on the road.
People looked out their windows. That’s when they saw them.
Two glowing eyes set deep in the stump’s dark center, staring back at the house with a hunger older than the tree itself. The shoots behind it swayed in unison, an army waiting for command.
Root legs dragging across the yard, tearing up turf with every step. The glowing eyes brightened, and the laugh rose again — sharper, crueler, echoing through the darkness like a promise.
The house lights flickered. The doors rattled. And every person inside realized the same terrible truth: Cutting down the tree hadn’t killed it. It had only made it angry.
